From the first moments of entering the Opening Night Gallery, I was surprised by how life-like the wax figures were. Out of the corner of my eye, I would catch someone "watching" me, only to discover it was another wax figure with it's eyes directed at some far-off target. Visitors posed with the various figures, whether they wanted their photo shot with Madonna or wanted to try to make Jennifer Lopez blush by whispering in her ear, guests were encouraged to interact and even embrace the figures -- quite unlike most museum's "please do not touch" policies. In fact, the museum encourages interaction, despite the expense and effort required to maintain the attractions -- including washing the hair(yes, they have real human hair!) and clothes of the figures.
In addition to circulating among the rich and famous in the various galleries, Madame Tussauds offers a number of interactive exhibits, from music mixing with Usher to having a makeover and walking down the red carpet with Jennifer Aniston. These are great fun for older children, as well as adults, and successfully separate Madame Tussauds from most stuffy museum experiences.
This is a great attraction for families, as well as celebrity-junkies. It's a great choice if you're looking for a rainy-day activity, want to escape the heat or cold, or are looking for a night-time attraction to check out -- since they're open until 10 p.m. it can be a good post-dinner choice for the whole family.
Madame Tussauds tends to be the least crowded on Mondays and Tuesdays in the morning/early afternoon, and is predictably the busiest on weekends (though mid-week school groups are a big portion of their visitors). Despite the line winding out front, the wait to buy a ticket and enter the museum tends to be less than 10 minutes, even when it's quite busy.
Admission to the museum displaying articles from the permanent collection, as well as changing exhibits on fashion, is always free.

SECOND DAY:
NBC Studios Tour - Guided Tour of NBC Studios in Rockefeller Center.
If you've always wanted a behind the scenes view of workings of NBC Studios, the NBC Studio Tour is a great choice. You'll learn about the history of NBC, as well as have a chance to see the studios used for several shows, including Saturday Night Live, Nightly News with Brian Williams and NBC Sports.
After spending about 10 minutes being led through security checkpoints and elevators, we arrived at the first stop on our NBC Studios Tour -- the NBC History Theatre. After our guides, Greg and Greer, demonstrated some of the tools used to create sound effects during NBC's early days as a radio broadcaster, we watched a brief video featuring Matt Lauer and Katie Couric. Matt and Katie welcomed us to the studio, and further discussed NBC's history. The video featured clips from many past and present NBC productions, including the Today Show which began in 1952 and the Tonight Show which first aired in 1954.
Our group was then brought to see the broadcast control room, where visitors can observe through a glass wall the monitors that are responsible for broadcasting over 100 hours of programming daily. NBC also has a backup broadcast control center in L.A., but with enough backup power to last a week without electricity, NYC seems pretty reliable.
Our group was then led through three different studios: Studio 3C where NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams is filmed; Studio 3K, home to NBC Sports, most famous for its Olympic coverage; and Studio 8H where Saturday Night Live is filmed. Studios featured on the tour vary, depending on which are being used, so you're not likely to see a studio that's in use or get a glimpse at any of your favorite NBC stars, but it's still neat to see what the Nightly News or Saturday Night Live set looks like when no one is there.
After seeing the studios, we were led to the Mini-Control Room, where each small group of visitors had an opportunity to have their picture taken behind the mock news desk. (Photos were available for sale after the tour, starting at $12.95, but there was no sales-pressure.) A volunteer from our group demonstrated how the "green screen" used for depicting weather forecasts, and even read a mythical weather report from the teleprompter.
The last stop on our tour was the NBC/Panasonic HDTV Theater. Supposedly intended to depict the "future of television and NBC," it was little more than a montage of clips from NBC shows.
The NBC Studios tour offers a thoroughly scripted opportunity to see the behind-the-scenes workings of the studios housed at 30 Rockefeller Center, but it's still an enjoyable experience. It's an especially great choice if you have in climate weather, since the entire tour is indoors, and also good for visitors who can't take too much walking or standing -- there are opportunities to sit for much of the tour.

FOUR DAY
New York TV and Movie Tour from On Location Tours
It can be difficult to find activities for your trip to New York City that will entertain and accommodate everyone in your group, but the New York TV and Movie Tour might just do that. This three-hour tour leaves from Ellen's Stardust Diner and takes participants on a luxury tour bus to see over 60 locations used in TV shows and movies filmed in Manhattan. One of the best features of the tour is that the bus has television screens where they show the scenes featuring the locations you're seeing in real life. This is great for those with dusty memories and also highlights some of the movie magic that takes place when filming.
For both children and adults who need a break from walking, this tour offers a welcome respite and the opportunity to see a vast area of Manhattan in just a few hours, covering much of the Manhattan's West Side, from the Upper West Side to Greenwich Village. It's also an excellent choice when the weather is too hot, too cold or too wet for spending extended periods of time outdoors, as most of the tour is spent on the bus.
Our tour guide, Kimberly, was friendly and knowledgeable. I was surprised to learn that New York has a $5 billion film industry and that over 200 movies have been filmed in New York City's Central Park. Despite occasional traffic, she kept the tour engaging with the movie clips, a trivia contest and by pointing out many celebrity homes along the tour. The New York TV and Movie Tour is a great choice for families with children, as there are several stops where they can get off to see the locations up close, though it might exceed the attention span of younger kids. The only disappointment was that the tour was slanted toward heavy coverage of some less important New York City films -- we were surprised that Big Daddy, Serendipity and MIB II were brought up repeatedly while other major New York City movies, including Superman, Taxi Driver and When Harry Met Sally were mentioned only briefly.
